Thoughts on Creative Practicing...

I have been teaching painting classes for several years now. I started with oils then moved into acrylics. Dorothy Dent is an artist from Missouri who paints country scenes on wood and saw blades of all shapes and sizes. As I would purchase her books with her patterns and replicate different pattern designs onto different objects, it didn't seem to bother me that I was "copying" her work. I mean after all I did purchase her permission, so to speak, right? So I think for me, I support Creative Practicing by Danielle Donaldson, is an EYE opening thought, idea, and wake up call for this artist. I was always bothered by the thought, of copying others work...but isn't that the way we learn? We learn by doing, and repeating, and studying material that others have gone on to conquer before us. It's adding our touch, our sense of color, light and dark, our personality, our, spirit, our soul, our vision to a piece of work, that maybe another person, before us created. I have been teaching what I call "Master Studies for Kids," for several years now. We read about the artist, and get to know him, then admire his work, and technique, then reproduce it somehow, in our own way. I have loved doing this with the kids.
